The 2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara Limited V6 4WD is one of the few sport-utility vehicles that still feature body-on-frame construction; that means it's built on a truck chassis rather than one designed for a car. Even so, I like the vehicle's driving dynamics because the Vitara's full-time 4WD system is based on a rear-wheel-drive platform. It gives the sport ute a better steering feel with less emphasis on power delivery through the front wheels. The Grand Vitara's ride is a little firm, but not harsh or unpleasant. It also has real off-road capability, with a 2-speed transfer case for a low range. The full-time 4-wheel-drive system includes 4-wheel high, 4-wheel lock (which allows the driver to lock the center differential) and 4-wheel low (which also locks the center differential). The exterior styling is a little generic, and I would prefer to lose the rear-mounted spare. But the interior is nicely done with a 3-spoke steering wheel, well-organized center stack, good storage and nice leather seats. A pop-up panel in the dash houses a portable Garmin touch-screen navigation system.
The Suzuki Grand Vitara is a very competitive entry in the crowded midsize SUV category. The exterior styling is nice but somewhat generic. The interior is smartly designed with lots of storage space, a nicely equipped center console that has a standard navigation system hidden inside a compartment near eye level, and adequate room for four passengers. The trunk, however, might be on the small side for an extended road trip. In addition, the back seat will be slightly tight for larger passengers. On the road the Grand Vitara is smooth and stable. There is adequate power for merging onto the freeway and the small SUV delivers decent gas mileage: I was able to achieve 21 mpg in mixed driving. Based on price alone, this car is a must-consider in the small SUV market.

Suzuki's entry in the small crossover SUV market has an odd name, but otherwise it is quite a good vehicle. The little Suzuki has nice styling inside and out with a roomy rear seat as well as plenty of cargo space. Access to the cargo area is via a large right-hinged door — which doesn't work well unless you have plenty of room behind the vehicle. The Grand Vitara's V6 power provides adequate get-up-and-go for most situations, while turning in reasonable fuel economy in the low 20s. Unlike other small crossovers, the Grand Vitara is a true truck-based SUV, complete with a low-range 4WD setting and hill descent control. With plenty of standard features, including GPS navigation, the Grand Vitara is a great value — our tester was fully loaded with a price under $28,500.
