WASHINGTON, April 16Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has indicated that the Senate may expedite consideration of the financial reform bill that calls for creation of a new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection.

Ed Tonkin, in an interview for NADA-TV, below, says "time is critical" for dealers to contact their Senators and urge them to support the Brownback Amendment. Sen. Sam Brownback's (R-Kan.) amendment would exempt dealers from the bureau.

"Keep in mind, the House exempted auto dealers from its financial reform bill for good reason. The Senate should do the same," Tonkin says. "Auto dealers should never have been included in the Senate bill in the first place. The Brownback Amendment will correct that mistake," Tonkin added.

NADA's legislative office is urging dealers to remind their Senators that dealers' Main Streetbusinesses did not contribute to the financial melt down, and that auto financing is already well regulated at both the federal and state levels.

"Another layer of burdensome regulation will limit access and increase the cost of credit for all car buyers," Tonkin says.

Introduction

The 2011 Mini Countryman due out in the spring of 2011 is a larger four-door model designed to expand the brand's appeal. Essentially Mini's take on the compact crossover SUV, the Countryman is 5.5 inches longer than a Cooper Clubman model as well as being wider and taller. Mini promises that the Cooper's fun-to-drive character will remain intact, however.

Inside, the Countryman features a familiar-looking cabin but with an elevated seating position befitting its crossover design. The standard rear bucket seats have a 5-inch range of fore/aft adjustment. You don't have to be content with a four-seat Mini this time around, though. Order the three-place bench seat and your Mini Countryman will seat five. The bench will adjust fore/aft and recline. Drop the rear seats into the floor and you're met with 41 cubic feet of cargo space in the Cooper Countryman, which is a significant jump over the 32.8 cubic feet in the Clubman.

The Countryman will enter the U.S. market powered by one of two engines: a standard front-wheel-drive 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 121 horsepower, and a turbocharged 181 hp variant included in the top-drawer, all-wheel-drive Mini Cooper S Countryman model. Manual or automatic transmissions transmit power through six gears apiece.

It's fully expected that Mini will offers its trademark selection of customizing options, including the usual wheel upgrades, telephone interfaces, a panoramic sunroof and John Cooper Works performance goodies. We're eager to put the 2011 Mini Countryman through its paces and see just how much stuff will fit inside, so be sure to check back soon for a full report.

Unlike many of its rivals, the TL has a front-wheel-drive layout. Though hard-core enthusiasts may bemoan the lack of rear-wheel drive, the TL provides much luxury and space for its sticker price. The front-wheel-drive chassis provides for a roomy interior, which is fitted with a host of comfort and convenience features. In addition to lots of standard equipment, "the agile TL is fun to drive, especially in Type-S form," said MSN Autos reviewer Dan Jedlicka.

The Infiniti G midsize luxury car is available as a sedan or coupe (G37). Beyond the extra doors, the G35 sedan is four inches longer and more than two inches taller than the coupe. The sportier-looking G37 is wider, however, and comes standard with 18-inch wheels and a 330-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine — 24 more horses than the sedan. According to Consumer Reports, the G35 is their top-rated upscale sedan, with an overall score of 92.

Vehicle Tested: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl 6A)

Pros: Enjoyable performance, distinctive styling, many high-tech features standard, available AWD.
Cons: Ride is a bit on the firm side, steering wheel doesn't telescope, uncomfortable third-row seat.

These days, technology trickles down at blinding speed — gadgets and gizmos that were once enjoyed only by the privileged few are now attainable for the masses. This is especially true in the automotive industry, and the affordable-yet-tech-laden 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander is proof.

Not so long ago, hands-free systems that allowed you to make telephone calls and program your navigation system via voice command were available only in more expensive luxury sedans. Today, you'll find this useful amenity in far humbler transportation — transportation like the Outlander, which sees the addition of an available hands-free link system (dubbed Fuse) for the 2010 model year. Comparable to Ford's Sync, Fuse is easy to engage and enables you to select tunes on your iPod without shifting your gaze from the road.

Appealing technology isn't the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander's only draw. The crossover is also genuinely fun to drive, with the sort of sharp handling that makes grocery-getting more than just a chore. All-wheel drive is available for travels in rough weather, and this Mitsu's bold sheet metal will likely resonate with compact-SUV shoppers in search of a vehicle that looks more assertive than your typical "cute ute."

Life isn't easy for small SUVs; thanks to a crowded pool of very worthy candidates, it's harder than ever to stand apart from the pack. The Toyota RAV4 V6 commands attention by delivering more horsepower and quicker acceleration than the Outlander, while the imposing Chevrolet Equinox tempts buyers with its polished good looks and spacious backseat.

There's also the universally competent Kia Sorento to consider, as well as the sporty Mazda CX-7. The budget-friendly Hyundai Tucson and the refined Honda CR-V are also excellent choices, provided their lack of V6 availability isn't a deal-breaker.

In the end, though, the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander distinguishes itself with its appealing mix of attributes. If Fuse, all-wheel drive and superb handling sound good to you, add this crossover to your must-see list.

User Rating:9.3
MSN Autos Rating:N/A

Rating: 8.0 Bottom Line:
The 2010 Mazda CX-7 is sportier than its competitors, and its turbocharged engine makes it peppier than most. Given those advantages, the CX-7 is worth a look for buyers interested in entry-level crossover vehicles.
Pros: * Peppy turbocharged engine * Efficient base engine * Sporty handling Cons: * Cheap plastic interior * Small navigation screen * Not as roomy as some competitors

When Mazda introduced the CX-7 in 2006, it existed in a class by itself. It was sportier and more powerful than fast-selling, entry-level utility vehicles like the Honda CR-V and RAV4. But it was also more expensive, and therefore failed to attract as many buyers. For 2010, ToyotaMazda hopes to remedy this problem by adding a new base engine and tagging it with a lower sticker price. The CX-7 is now priced in line with the best-sellers in the category, and its sporty driving character gives it a competitive advantage over similarly equipped rivals.

Model Lineup
The 2010 Mazda CX-7 is offered in four trims: i SV, i Sport, s Touring and s Grand Touring. A new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder base engine is standard in the i trim, while the s gets the carryover 2.3-liter turbocharged four. The i SV comes standard with cloth upholstery, cruise control, air conditioning, power windows, remote keyless entry, Multi-Information Display, AM/FM/CD stereo, auxiliary input jack and 17-inch alloy wheels. The i Sport adds leather to the steering wheel and shift knob and comes with Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity. The s Touring gets a power driver's seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery and 18-inch alloy wheels. Among the standard features on the loaded s Grand Touring are automatic climate control, keyless access and starting, a navigation system with a rearview camera, a blind-spot monitoring system, a Bose Centerpoint surround sound audio system, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, a sunroof, automatic xenon headlights and 19-inch alloy wheels. Select features of the s Grand Touring are optional on s Touring and i Sport versions. Standard safety equipment on all trims includes dual front airbags, front side airbags and side-curtain airbags with rollover deployment, a tire-pressure monitor, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, traction control and electronic stability control.

Rating: 8.2 Bottom Line:
Hyundai is keen to what small SUV buyers seek, and has packed the all-new Tucson with the goods it needs to take on competition like the Honda CR-V. Smart looks and more room are also part of the package.
Pros: * Plenty of space * Great 6-speed automatic transmission * Efficient 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine Cons: * Interior uses cheap-feeling materials * Vague steering * 2.4-liter four cylinder sounds rough under load

With more and more consumers shying away from gas-hungry, full-size sport-utility vehicles, almost every carmaker is jumping on the crossover bandwagon, causing the segment to swell in number of offerings faster than, well, the SUV segment did back in the early '90s when fuel efficiency wasn't even a blip on most car buyers' radars. To keep its Tucson fresh amid a sea of capable competition, Hyundai has grown the smallish utility vehicle in overall size and given it an efficient 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that's good for up to 31 mpg on the open road. Throw in optional all-wheel drive and the choice of a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and the Tucson is well-worth the $18,995 base price.

Model Lineup
Like most CUVs, the 2010 Tucson is available only in 5-door trim with seating for five people. To keep things simple, Hyundai says there are only 10 buildable configurations for the new Tucson, with two real trim levels — GLS and Limited. In GLS guise, the Tucson comes with power steering, a tilt steering wheel, power windows and door locks and 17-inch steel wheels. The newest CUV from Hyundai also packs plenty of safety technology. Even in base GLS trim, the car comes with six airbags, anti-lock brakes and enough acronym-laden traction aids to make your head spin. If you can do without the leather interior touches of the Limited model, the GLS delivers plenty of safety at a remarkably low price point. For a little extra cash, Hyundai will let you outfit the Tucson GLS with features usually found on the more expensive Limited model. The Popular Equipment Package includes a telescoping, leather-wrapped steering wheel and Bluetooth hands-free calling. You can also add a Navigation Package complete with rearview camera for safety when backing up. Stepping up to Limited trim adds a few luxury amenities like power heated side-view mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control and plenty of leather inside. There's also significantly more brightwork outside, with chrome accents on the grille and door handles. More importantly, Bluetooth hands-free calling comes standard on the top-of-the-line Tucson. Though opting for the Limited trim will give you nearly all of the otherwise optional equipment on the spec sheet, buyers can spring for a Premium package. Along with a massive panoramic sunroof, you also get a good navigation system and premium audio.

Ferrari is reporting that its 599XX set a record on the legendary Nurburgring. The company says it is the first time a production-derived sports car has bested the 7-minute barrier on the classic 12.9-mile Nordschleife circuit, lapping it in 6 minutes, 58.16 seconds.
The 599XX, which inspired the 599 GTO, is designed for track use -- but not for racing, Ferrari says. Only 29 copies will be built. The 599XX is powered by a development of the V12 engine in the 599 GTB Fiorano producing a whopping 690 hp. The 599XX features Ferrari's High-Performance Dynamic Concept, an integrated design and chassis setup that uses electronics to govern the mechanical limits of the handling for maximum performance. The car also has what Ferrari calls Actiflow -- it increases downforce and/or cuts drag depending on the car's trim during cornering.

The 2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara Limited V6 4WD is one of the few sport-utility vehicles that still feature body-on-frame construction; that means it's built on a truck chassis rather than one designed for a car. Even so, I like the vehicle's driving dynamics because the Vitara's full-time 4WD system is based on a rear-wheel-drive platform. It gives the sport ute a better steering feel with less emphasis on power delivery through the front wheels. The Grand Vitara's ride is a little firm, but not harsh or unpleasant. It also has real off-road capability, with a 2-speed transfer case for a low range. The full-time 4-wheel-drive system includes 4-wheel high, 4-wheel lock (which allows the driver to lock the center differential) and 4-wheel low (which also locks the center differential). The exterior styling is a little generic, and I would prefer to lose the rear-mounted spare. But the interior is nicely done with a 3-spoke steering wheel, well-organized center stack, good storage and nice leather seats. A pop-up panel in the dash houses a portable Garmin touch-screen navigation system.
The Suzuki Grand Vitara is a very competitive entry in the crowded midsize SUV category. The exterior styling is nice but somewhat generic. The interior is smartly designed with lots of storage space, a nicely equipped center console that has a standard navigation system hidden inside a compartment near eye level, and adequate room for four passengers. The trunk, however, might be on the small side for an extended road trip. In addition, the back seat will be slightly tight for larger passengers. On the road the Grand Vitara is smooth and stable. There is adequate power for merging onto the freeway and the small SUV delivers decent gas mileage: I was able to achieve 21 mpg in mixed driving. Based on price alone, this car is a must-consider in the small SUV market.

Suzuki's entry in the small crossover SUV market has an odd name, but otherwise it is quite a good vehicle. The little Suzuki has nice styling inside and out with a roomy rear seat as well as plenty of cargo space. Access to the cargo area is via a large right-hinged door — which doesn't work well unless you have plenty of room behind the vehicle. The Grand Vitara's V6 power provides adequate get-up-and-go for most situations, while turning in reasonable fuel economy in the low 20s. Unlike other small crossovers, the Grand Vitara is a true truck-based SUV, complete with a low-range 4WD setting and hill descent control. With plenty of standard features, including GPS navigation, the Grand Vitara is a great value — our tester was fully loaded with a price under $28,500.

Aside from major shows that take place annually in Geneva; New York; Tokyo; Frankfurt, Germany; and Pebble Beach, Calif., there are smaller venues and up-and-comers -- like Beijing, which took place this week.
Of course, most manufacturers will save their most groundbreaking debuts for the heavy hitters listed above, but that's not to say Beijing didn't have its share of oohs and aahs. We already covered Mercedes-Benz's Shooting Break concept and the less pricey iteration of the Porsche Panamera that was shown, and introductions from BMW, Volkswagen, Ford, Nissan and others kept things interesting. Here's a rundown of some Beijing highlights:
